The Kedah Digital Library reimagines the role of a public library through a forward-thinking “Library Without Books” concept — transforming a historic colonial bungalow into a contemporary learning hub and community node. Located beside one of Alor Setar’s largest urban parks, the project adopts an adaptive reuse approach that carefully preserves the heritage value of the former Memorial Tunku Abdul Rahman Building while introducing a modern annex designed to support digital learning, collaboration, and public engagement.
DMI’s metal roofing and cladding systems contributed to the seamless integration between the old and new architectural elements, supporting the project’s vision of blending heritage with contemporary design. The modern building envelope was carefully detailed to complement the scale and character of the original mansion while delivering long-term durability and reliable weather protection. Constructed using VERMOE® steel manufactured by BlueScope, the coated steel features textured finish that showcases contemporary aesthetics for public institutional architecture. Through the thoughtful application of modern metal building systems, the project demonstrates how adaptive reuse and contemporary interventions can coexist harmoniously to create meaningful and future-ready community spaces.
